  • An Original Artwork, quite simply means a unique one-off piece created by Emma Bond in her studio with her own hands.

  • Monoprint / Monotype

    The printing process:

This is a fine art printing technique that uses a polished printing plate (usually glass or metal), printing ink and dampened paper to transfer a unique design onto a sheet of paper.

They are created by applying and removing printing ink in a number of ways to create an image on the printing plate. This might involve using brushes to paint ink on, cloth to remove ink in certain areas and other tools such as pencils and rollers to create different textures.

Printmaking paper is soaked in water and blotted to create a damp surface. This is placed on the printing plate and put through a press which adds pressure and transfers the image onto the paper.

Monotype and Monoprint are sometimes used interchangeably but there is a difference between the two.

Monoprint is usually a variation on a series, as there is a pattern or image on the plates surface that can be printed multiple times over, in a variety of ways. This could take the form of a stencil that is present in all prints but inked in different ways, making them part of a small edition but with their own personalities.

Monotype is considered one-of-a-kind and does not have any repeatable elements. No two monotypes are alike, and the image created can only be used once.

Trace Monotype is a one-off printing technique that produces beautiful tonal drawings. A roller is used to apply a thin layer of ink to a printing plate. A sheet of thin paper is laid gently on top. A pen or pencil is then used on the paper to draw an image. Where the pencil presses the paper against the tacky ink below, the ink is picked up and transferred.

  • Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking method that involves scratching an image into a plate with a pointed tool. Drypoint plates are usually made in copper, zinc or plastic. Recycled Tetrapak packaging (think juice and alternative milk cartons) also make excellent plates.

This process of scratching creates a slightly raised ragged rough edge to the lines, known as the burr. When ink is applied to the plate and then wiped off, both the scratched line and specifically the burr is filled with ink. Dampened paper is placed over the plate and put through a printing press. The combination of damp paper and pressure from the press transfers the artwork to the paper.

Due to the delicate nature of the burr, drypoint is usually made in small editions, stopping before the burr is crushed by the pressure of the printing press.

Each print in a drypoint edition will be slightly different depending on the application and removal of the ink.
